UK court blocks Ganic's extradition to Serbia

28/07/2010

LONDON, United Kingdom -- A court in London rejected on Tuesday (July 27th) Serbia's extradition request regarding former Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) presidency member Ejup Ganic. The court ruled that charges against Ganic could have been politically motivated. "These proceedings are brought and are being used for political purposes, and as such, amount to an abuse of process of this court," District Judge Timothy Workman said, adding that Ganic is free to return to BiH. He was arrested at London's Heathrow Airport on March 1st, based on a warrant issued by Belgrade. Serbia wants him in connection with a May 1992 attack in Sarajevo against a Yugoslav National Army convoy, which left more than 40 soldiers dead. Ganic praised the court's ruling, while Belgrade vowed to appeal. (RTS, Tanjug, B92, Beta, AFP, BBC, The Guardian - 27/07/10)
