Panel clears Bulgaria's Georgieva of ties to secret police

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- Bulgaria's new EU Commissioner-designate for International Co-operation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva has been found eligible for the position, according to a parliament commission tasked with preventing former agents of the communist-era secret police from holding key posts. The announcement came on Tuesday (January 26th). Georgieva's past was checked at the request of the ruling GERB party that nominated her as well as several NGOs. Bulgaria's previous nominee, Rumiana Jeleva, withdrew her candidacy amid claims of incompetence and possible conflict of interests The charges were later found to be untrue.
