Greece's Karamanlis backs Papoulias for second term

ATHENS, Greece -- Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is supporting President Karolos Papoulias's bid for a second term, local media reported on Friday (June 19th). Karamanlis praised Papoulias for his performance and public popularity. His current term ends next year. Traditionally, presidents in Greece are elected among candidates from the opposition. The conservative New Democracy party heads the government, while Papoulias is from the main opposition PASOK party. (Ethnos, Ta Nea - 19/06/09)
