WASHINGTON, United States -- Chief of General Staff General Ilker Basbug said on Monday (June 1st) that Turkey is "determined to eradicate" the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party, local media reported Tuesday. Addressing a conference on Turkey-US relations in Washington, Basbug said the PKK's presence in northern Iraq threatens not only Turkey, but also regional security. He also urged that co-operation with the United States move beyond intelligence-sharing, saying it must rise to "a whole new level".
In other news, non-permanent member Turkey assumed the one-month rotating presidency of the UN Security Council on Monday. Ankara's representative to the UN, Baki Ilkin, said the June schedule will include debating the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq, the situation in the Middle East, protecting civilians in armed conflict and UN peacekeeping operations.
