ATHENS, Greece -- Authorities freed on Saturday (September 27th) a former official of the government of Saddam Hussein whom fellow Iraqis allegedly kidnapped for ransom. The police did not give the man's name or former position. On September 18th, his wife reportedly notified authorities of his kidnapping in Athens and a 20,500-euro ransom note. Police found him in a deserted building and arrested four Iraqi suspects. The former official was planning to seek political asylum in Belgium. (AFP, RIA Novosti - 27/09/08)
