Croatian resort fire brought under control

ZAGREB, Croatia -- Fire fighters managed on Sunday (September 21st) to take control of a huge fire that destroyed a pine forest Friday night near the resort of Makarska on Croatia's Adriatic coast. The disaster is believed to have affected an area of around 600 hectares. Between 350 and 400 firemen were involved in the operation, as were more than 90 vehicles brought in from across the country. Three helicopters joined the effort Sunday morning and after strong winds dissipated, a Canadair aircraft and other special equipment were also used. (HRT, Vecernji List - 21/09/08)
