ISTANBUL, Turkey -- The National Security Council (GMK) held its regular bimonthly session Thursday (August 21st) in Istanbul to discuss current security issues affecting Turkey. The recent surge in terrorist activity and the conflict between Russia and Georgia in the Caucasus region topped the meeting's agenda. In a statement afterwards, the GMK's general secretariat said Turkey will resolutely continue its antiterrorism efforts. The council also reviewed the effect of the conflict in South Ossetia on the region and possible measures to prevent similar conflicts. This was the last such meeting for Turkey's chief of general staff, General Yasar Buyukanit, who is retiring on August 31st. (Zaman - 22/08/08; Arab Monitor - 21/08/08)
