ANKARA, Turkey -- Warplanes bombed 13 targets belonging to the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq late Wednesday (July 23rd). According to a statement on the military's website Thursday, the planes hit PKK "facilities" in the Zab region near the Turkish-Iraqi border. It said the operation against the PKK will continue. The group uses northern Iraq as a base to launch attacks on Turkish troops in border areas. Turkey, provided with intelligence by the United States, began stepping up military action against the PKK in December. (Hurriyet, AP, Reuters, AFP - 24/07/08)
