EU condemns campaign-related incidents in Macedonia

SKOPJE, Macedonia -- Slovenia, current holder of the rotating EU presidency, on Tuesday (May 13th) condemned several incidents that marred the official launch of the election campaign in Macedonia, including an assassination attempt against the leader of the Democratic Union of Integration, Ali Ahmeti, on Sunday. "There is no place for violence in the election campaign," the Slovenian government said in a statement, urging all parties to commit to free, fair and peaceful elections. At the same time, Slovenia appealed to Macedonian authorities for an investigation into the incidents and punishment of those responsible. The US Embassy in Macedonia also expressed serious concern over the incidents. (Makfax, MIA, A1 - 13/05/08)
