Romania mourns death of Orthodox Church patriarch

BUCHAREST, Romania -- The government announced that Romania will observe a national day of mourning Friday (August 3rd) for Patriarch Teoctist, the former head of the Orthodox Church. He died of heart complications Monday after undergoing prostate surgery. He was 92. All important figures of the Romanian Orthodoxy and patriarchs from neighbouring countries will attend the burial ceremony on Friday. Political figures, including Romanian President Traian Basescu, also plan to attend. (Rompres, Hotnews.ro - 01/08/07)
