BELGRADE, Serbia -- The country's political parties have started preparing for the January 21st parliamentary elections, according to local media reports Monday (November 13th). Serbian President Boris Tadic, who leads the main opposition Democratic Party, issued a statement saying he is certain that voters would support his party rather than the ultranationalist Serbian Radical Party.
Separately, Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic, leader of the Serbian Renewal Movement, said on Sunday that his party is holding negotiations about a potential coalition with pro-European parties. Draskovic's party is a member of the current coalition government, led by Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.
At the weekend, the main board of G17 Plus, a party that recently left the ruling coalition, decided not to join a pre-election coalition. Party leader Mladjan Dinkic said G17's campaign will focus on economic issues. (Blic, Danas - 13/11/06; Beta, RTS - 12/11/06)
