New incidents mar Macedonia's election campaign

26/06/2006

SKOPJE, Macedonia -- Despite warnings from the West about continued violence, a new clash erupted at the weekend between supporters of the main ethnic Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI) -- junior partner in the coalition government -- and the opposition Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA). According to local police in the Skopje village of Rasce, three people were injured in fighting between DUI and DPA supporters late Saturday (24 June). The West sees the run-up to the 5 July vote as a crucial test of Macedonia's Euro-Atlantic bid. (Vecer - 26/06/06; Makfax, Telma TV - 25/06/06)
