Romanian Court Rejects Ministry's Attempt to Put Off Railway Strike

09/06/2005

BUCHAREST, Romania -- A court Wednesday (8 June) rejected the economy ministry's attempt to put off a 20-day strike by train mechanics and other employees in the railway sector. The ministry had requested a 30-day postponement, citing the need to fix damage to the railway infrastructure caused by recent flooding. The court, however, turned down the request and ruled the strike could continue. The workers are demanding a 10 per cent salary increase, among other things. (Nine o'clock - 08/06/05)
