Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) secured the majority of the vote in the local elections held on 28 March 2004. The AKP won 41.6 per cent of the vote, well ahead of the left-leaning Republican People's Party which won just 18.2 per cent.
The election results confirm the position of the ruling party. "People voted for stability and development," Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, leader of the AKP said.
