With voter turnout significantly below the 50 per cent required by law, the 16 November presidential election in Serbia has failed. According to the Centre for Free Elections and Democracy, which monitored the vote, around 39 per cent of registered voters went to the polls.
Had the outcome been valid, the winner would have been ultranationalist Tomislav Nikolic, of the Serbian Radical Party. Contrary to pre-election predictions, Nikolic soundly defeated Dragoljub Micunovic, of the ruling DOS coalition. Nikolic received about 1.2 million votes, or 46.9 per cent. Micunovic won 36 per cent, or about 900,000 votes.
