The newly independent Republic of Montenegro held its first parliamentary elections on September 10th, 2006. Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and his Democratic Party of Socialists claimed victory the next day.
Djukanovic's Coalition for European Montenegro (DPS-SDP) won 40 seats, followed by Andrija Mandic's Serbian List, with 12 seats. The SNP-NS-DSS coalition won 11 seats, as did the reformist Movement for Changes. Parties representing ethnic Albanians and other minorities also won seats.
International observers assessed the vote as having been conducted largely in line with Montenegro's commitments to OSCE, as well as with Council of Europe standards for democratic elections.
"The people of the world's newest country can be proud that their first elections since gaining independence meet international electoral standards. We look forward to working with our Montenegrin parliamentary colleagues and overcoming the remaining challenges," said Joao Soares, head of the OSCE Assembly Delegation.
The total voter turnout was 71.3%.
