Montenegro held parliamentary elections on 20 October 2002. President Milo Djukanovic's Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and its coalition partner, the Social Democrats (SNP), won an absolute majority in parliament. The victory sets the stage for a stable government in Montenegro after months of political uncertainty.
Djukanovic's coalition won 47.7 per cent of the vote and 39 seats in the republic's 75-seat parliament. The pro-Yugoslav opposition coalition Together for Change won 30 seats, while four seats went to the separatist Liberal Alliance (LSCG). An ethnic Albanian bloc won two seats in the parliament. A high turnout – over 77 per cent of eligible voters – distinguished the Montenegrin vote from other recent elections.
