Incumbent President Traian Basescu won a second five-year term in the second round of voting on December 6th 2009. He won 50.33% of the vote, compared to 49.67% for Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Mircea Geoana. Almost 80% of votes cast abroad went to Basescu.
Turnout was 59.9%, marking an increase from the first round in November, where it was 53.5%.
Geoana and Basescu traded a series of accusations in the days leading up to the run-off. The most serious involved a video that seemed to show Basescu hitting a child during his 2004 campaign. It turned out to be electronically altered footage.
