The ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) won most of the mayoral races in the 6 June 2004 local elections. According to official results released by the Central Electoral Bureau, PSD won 32.17 per cent of the votes in the election. The National Liberal Party followed with 15.85 per cent of the vote.
The elections in the EU-accessing country took place amid strong critiques of corruption and incompetence at the government of Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.
The local elections precede the presidential and parliamentary polls due to take place in November.
