Branko Crvenkovski, the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), was elected president of Macedonia, having won 548,583 votes, or 62.66 per cent of valid ballots cast in the second round of early presidential elections on 28 April 2004. His opponent, Sasko Kedev of the VMRO-DPMNE, won 326,951 votes, or 37.34 per cent.
According to the State Election Commission, 53.33 per cent of eligible voters went to the polls, meeting the necessary threshold for the election results to stand. The vote was held after former President Boris Trajkovski, died in a plane crash near Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina in February.
