Macedonian's headed to the polls on June 1st in a snap parliamentary election. The ruling VMRO-DPMNE party secured more than 60 seats in the 120-seat parliament. VMRO-DPMNE garnered around 440,000 votes compared to 215,000 for the opposition Sun coalition, led by the Social Democrats. Ali Ahmeti's Democratic Union of Integration (DUI) received 11.1% of the vote and the Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA), led by Menduh Thaci, got 10.2%.
The voting was marred by clashes that left one person dead and several injured, and a revote was called in 187 polling stations on June 15th. A third revote took place on June 29th in 15 polling places.
DUI received 12.8% of the vote, or 18 seats in parliament, in the revote, and DPA won 8.4% of the vote and 13 seats. The For a Better Macedonia coalition, led by the ruling VMRO-DPMNE party of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, confirmed its victory by attracting 48.8% of the vote. The opposition SDSM won 23.65%. Turnout in the June 1st and 15th elections was 57%.
