Kosovo held local municipal elections on 26 October 2002. The final voter turnout in the election was approximately 54 per cent.
Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova's Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) won a majority in 11 out of 30 municipalities in Kosovo, including in Pristina. According to results announced by the OSCE, the LDK could control several other towns if it forms alliances with smaller groups. Support for the party has slipped since the previous local elections, when the LDK won control of 20 municipalities. Hashim Thaci's Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) will have a majority in four municipalities and could control at least four more in coalition with smaller parties. Ramush Haradinaj's Alliance for the Future of Kosovo ranked third, but did not win a majority in any of the municipalities. Serb parties prevailed in five areas.
In total, 40 of 68 political entities have won at least one of the available seats. Women will make up 28.5 per cent of the new municipal assemblies, 262 having been elected. Nearly all of Kosovo's smaller communities received representation in the municipal assemblies where they live.
