After two unsuccessful parliamentary elections, in March 2009 and September 2007, Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) led by Georgios Papandreou won the October 4th parliamentary elections. Taking 44% of the vote, the party won a comfortable 160 seats majority in the 300-member assembly, securing the needed support for reforms -- to improve an economy facing a budget deficit, already twice the EU limit and heading towards its first recession since 1993. The New Democracy Party (ND) led by Antonis Samaras won 91 seats.
Other votes were shared by the three main parties: The Communist Party of Greece led by Aleka Papariga took 21 seats. Party Popular Orthodox Rally (LA.O.S.) headed by Georgios Karatzaferis managed to get just 15 seats and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) led by Alexis Tsipras took 13.
The central Election Commission registered 9,933,385 voters of population (10,737,428).
