The Greek conservative New Democracy (ND) party won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections held 7 March 2004, ending 11 years of rule by the Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK). ND won 165 seats in the 300-seat parliament and 45.3 per cent of the vote. PASOK won 40.5 per cent of the votes and 117 seats. The Communist Party won 12 seats, while the Coalition of the Left (Synaspismos) won six seats.
ND leader Costas Karamanlis took over as prime minister on 10 March 2004.
Voter turnout for the elections was 76 per cent.
