Ivo Josipovic was elected as the president of Croatia for a five-year post on January 10th 2010, in the second round of presidential elections. The first round, held on December 27th 2009, did not yield a candidate winning more than 50% of the vote.
In the second round, Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP) candidate Josipovic received 60.3% of the total vote, followed by the first round runner-up Milan Bandic, an Independent, with 39.74% of the vote.
Josipovic called for a fairer Croatia. "I strongly believe that we all want to live in a country where work is paid for and crime is punished … a country of social justice," he said.
Voter turnout was 50.1%.
