Incumbent Croatian President Stepjan Mesic was re-elected to his post for another 5-year mandate on 16 January 2005 in the second round of presidential elections. The first round, held on 2 January 2005, did not yield a candidate winning more than 50 per cent of the vote.
In the second round, Social Democratic Party of Croatia (SDP) candidate Mesic received 66 per cent of the total vote, followed by Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) candidate and deputy prime minister, Jadranka Kosor, who received 34 per cent of the vote.
"Croatia must be a modern, European and democratic country with satisfied citizens," Mesic said, after winning the election. "It will be possible only if we change many things. We will decide where Croatia is heading, to the 21st century or back in time. I offer the 21st century."
