Presidential elections were held in Bulgaria on October 22nd, 2006. Georgi Parvanov, head of the Socialist Party and incumbent president since 2001, won the election with 64% of the votes, becoming the first head of state since 1989 to secure a second term. His main opponent, ultranationalist Volen Siderov, won 21.5% of the vote, while the candidate of the mainstream right-wing parties, former constitutional judge Nedelcho Beronov, mustered only 9%.
Because of insufficient voter turnout (43%), a second round was held on October 29th. Parvanov won the round decisively, with 75.9% to Siderov's 24.1%. Second round turnout was 55.05%.
