Bulgaria held presidential elections on 18 November 2001. The Socialist Party's Georgi Parvanov was victorious with 53.3 percent of the votes. Parvanov beat out incumbent Petar Stoyanov, who received 46.7 percent of the votes. Voter turnout was 54.5 percent, the Central Election Commission said.
Parvanov rose the helm of his party in 1996. Under his leadership, Socialists set out to reform themselves along the lines of Western European Social Democrats. Parvanov pledged to continue efforts to win the country membership in the European Union and NATO.
