Bulgaria held parliamentary elections on 17 June 2001. Falling just one vote shy of an absolute parliamentary majority, the contest resulted in an overwhelming victory for former King Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and his newly-formed National Movement Simeon II (NMS). The movement, founded only three months before the elections, easily defeated the ruling centre-right Union of Democratic Forces (UDF) and the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).
Parliament officially approved a coalition government composed of the NMS and the ethnic Turkish Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) on July 24 2001, affording Prime Minister Saxe-Coburg-Gotha’s government an additional 21 deputies.
Note:
Coalition for Bulgaria is an association of parties and civil structures led by the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).
