Polling stations opened across Bulgaria 26 October, 2003, for local elections that many observers felt were a possible prelude to early parliamentary elections. The Bulgarian Socialist Party won 33 per cent of the vote in the country’s 263 municipalities. The results showed a dramatic slide in confidence in the ruling Simeon II National Movement, which won 10 per cent of the vote. The Union of Democratic Forces won 21 per cent of the vote, and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms won 10 per cent. Voter turnout was 47 per cent.
