Albania held its Presidential Elections on 24 June 2002. Alfred Moisiu, a 73-year-old retired general, became the new Albanian president took office on 24 July 2002 after wining more than three-fifths of the vote in parliament. Moisiu is the first president from the post-communist period elected with a consensus of the political forces. He was found as a formula for compromise, getting 97 votes pro in a parliament of 140. Moisiu said he would remain faithful to the constitution and his priority would be Albania’s Euro-Atlantic integration.
The vote removes the prospect of early elections and signals a significant change in Albania’s political climate. After a decade of political confrontation, the country seems to be entering a stage of political dialogue.
