The Albanian parliamentary elections, starting on 24 June 2001, took place in four rounds. Due to claims of electoral fraud, some districts returned to the polls on 8, 22 and 29 July. The Socialist Party, which has ruled since 1997, won a commanding victory, securing 73 seats in the 140-member legislature. After some inter-party debate, 32-year old Ilir Meta was re-appointed prime minister. His Socialist Party rules in coalition with the smaller Social Democratic Party, Democratic Alliance, Agrarian Party and Human Rights Protection Party.
Note:
The Union For Victory is a coalition led by the Democratic Party. Other members include the Democratic Party of Albania, Party of the Albanian National Front, Republican Party of Albania, Movement of Legality Party and Liberal Democratic Union.
