Top US commander in Iraq visits Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey -- The commander of US forces in Iraq, General Ray Odierno, arrived in Turkey on Tuesday (February 2nd) to discuss measures aimed at fighting the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq. "It is important that we develop a common understanding of the root causes of violence, so we can assist in determining political, economic and security measures that will contribute to increased security and safety of the Turkish and Iraqi people," Odierno said in a statement as he arrived. In Ankara, he is expected to meet with Chief of Staff Ilker Basbug, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Interior Minister Besir Atalay. (Zaman - 03/02/10; AFP - 02/02/10)
