SKOPJE, Macedonia -- After two days of debate, parliament decided on Saturday (April 12th) to dissolve itself and hold new elections on June 1st. Fifty opposition members boycotted the vote, while the remaining 70 lawmakers supported Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's proposal, triggered by Greece's decision to block Macedonia's NATO bid ten days ago.
Local media reports say Matthew Nimetz, UN special envoy in the longstanding name dispute between Macedonia and Greece, will visit the two countries later this week. He stops first in Skopje on Thursday, before travelling on to Athens on Friday. Reports say he will try to gauge whether either side has changed its position since the NATO summit in Bucharest.
