BELGRADE, Serbia -- Senior politicians, including President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, as well as thousands of mourners, paid their respects to late Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic on Thursday (March 12th), marking the sixth anniversary of his assassination. Representatives of Djindjic's Democratic Party and his widow, son, mother and sister laid flowers and lit candles at his grave. Former ministers from his government and ministers of the current government paid tribute as well. At noon, more than 3,000 people joined a march in Belgrade's city centre in memory of the pro-European leader, who was assassinated on March 12th 2003 outside the parliament building. Djindjic headed Serbia's first reformist government after the toppling of Slobodan Milosevic's regime.
In other news Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said Serbia would likely file its application for EU membership this year.
