All eyes were on the United States this week as the marathon presidential election there reached its finale. Among bloggers in Southeast Europe, the predominant mood was one of optimism, with many hailing both candidates for exemplifying the democratic process.

"Barack Obama became the president of the United States explaining to his countrymen that nothing is impossible," writes Catalin Tolontan, editor-in-chief of the Romanian daily Gazeta Sporturilor, on his blog. He also gives John McCain's concession speech high marks. "Touching but strong. [McCain] offered us a lesson in politics, civilisation and patriotism."

"I keep wondering how this historic moment can influence us," writes Dozy. "It is now the case for us to answer the question: can we?" he adds, alluding to Obama's campaign slogan and Romania's efforts to progress.

Manu sees in Obama a great orator and someone who has an "optimism that is either authentic or well trained". On a more pragmatic note, he adds: "What interests us now is whether the United States will lift visa requirements for Romanian citizens."

In Croatia, Davorko Vidovic recalls a memorable image from election night. "It was very moving to watch an elderly African-American with tears in his eyes as he stood in Times Square with quiet dignity, feeling deeply that which for decades was only a dream."

Although describing himself as an Obama fan, Vidovic feels McCain ended his campaign admirably. "With a statesman's responsibility and wisdom, he congratulated the 44th American president, calling all Americans to stand behind him … I would like to see Croatia and its politicians united, regardless of their narrow personal, group and party interests, able to take on the responsibility of a job in earnest for the greater good of their country and its citizens."

"Barack Obama conducted his presidential acceptance speech with inspiration and dignity, spoke wisely, with a historical argument that took a look towards the future. His speech certainly brings hope, not only in the United States but throughout the world," writes Serbia's Branislav Kovacevic Cole at B92 blogs.

In Albania, Trebeshina sees the election as sending a crucial message. "A new wind is blowing today in America, and we hope that Obama will keep his promise to the world."

"This is the greatness of America, why it is the greatest democracy worldwide," writes Gerrard73 at Gazeta Korrieri. "Obama won in some states that were focal points of slavery, a fantastic paradox. Somebody years ago had a dream, and this dream is coming true."
